The result is the familiar mix of atrophic (depressed) scars — ice-pick, boxcar, and rolling — and, less often, raised hypertrophic scars. The most effective acne scar care combines several tools. Fractional CO2 and erbium laser resurfacing create controlled micro-injuries that prompt the skin to remodel collagen and smooth boxcar and shallow scars. Microneedling with radiofrequency (MNRF) stimulates collagen at a controlled depth, helping rolling scars and overall texture. Subcision uses a fine instrument to release the fibrous bands that tether rolling scars from below, lifting the depression, while TCA CROSS places a precise touch of trichloroacetic acid into deep ice-pick scars to encourage them to fill in. Dermal fillers can also be used to lift selected depressed scars. Most patients improve most from a combined approach, sequenced across sessions.

The single most important factor for darker skin is treating it gently and precisely. The predominant skin types across the Nilgiris and Tamil Nadu are Fitzpatrick IV–VI, which carry more melanin and are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — the brown marks that can appear when skin is treated too aggressively. There is an Ooty-specific reason to be careful, too: at this altitude the air is thin and UV exposure is intense, so freshly treated skin can mark and darken more easily than people expect from the mild hill-station temperatures.
