Vitiligo Treatment in Coimbatore
A white patch noticed in the mirror, then another on the hand, then the question everyone asks: will it spread? At Dr. Thaj Clinic on 100 Feet Road the answer comes from an examination, not a guess. Vitiligo is confirmed, its activity judged, and a programme of narrowband UVB, targeted phototherapy and prescription creams is set with timelines you can hold us to. Our dermatologist’s overview of vitiligo treatment options explains each tool.

Stopping the Spread, Then Bringing Pigment Back
In vitiligo the immune system switches off the melanocytes in patches of skin, leaving sharply bordered white areas that burn easily in the Kongu sun. It is not contagious, not caused by food, and not a sign of poor hygiene, three things Coimbatore patients are often told before they reach a dermatologist. The consultation begins with a Wood’s lamp examination to confirm the diagnosis and a careful look for signs of activity: new spots, patches with hazy edges, or whitening where the skin was recently scratched or injured.
Treatment follows the stage. Spreading disease is calmed first with prescription creams applied to the patches and, when it is moving fast, a short oral course under the doctor’s supervision. Narrowband UVB phototherapy, given in the clinic two to three times a week, stabilises the immune attack and recruits pigment cells from the hair follicles back into the patch. For a few small patches on the face or neck, targeted phototherapy treats only the affected skin.
Repigmentation appears as small brown islands inside the patch that gradually join. On the face it usually starts within two to three months; the trunk and limbs take longer; hands, feet and lips are stubborn and we say so. A course is twenty to thirty sessions with monthly photographs, and most patients continue a lighter maintenance schedule once the patches have filled.
Patches that have not changed for a year and do not respond to light can be treated surgically at the Thalassery and Kannur flagships, where melanocyte-keratinocyte transfer and blister-roof grafting move pigment cells from normal skin into the patch. Coimbatore patients are assessed and referred with their records. Sun protection on the patches is non-negotiable, because they cannot tan and burn quickly.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions — Vitiligo Treatment in Coimbatore
Will my vitiligo spread?
Possibly, if it is in an active phase; that is what the examination determines. Signs of activity include new patches, hazy borders and whitening at sites of injury. Active disease is treated promptly to halt spread before repigmentation is attempted.
How long before I see pigment returning?
On the face, small islands of pigment usually appear after eight to twelve weeks of phototherapy; the body takes longer, and hands and feet longest. Twenty to thirty sessions is a typical course, reviewed monthly with photographs.
What does vitiligo treatment cost in Coimbatore?
It depends on the extent of the patches and the mix of phototherapy and creams. The dermatologist lays out the plan and the cost at the first visit; there is no obligation to start that day.
Is phototherapy safe?
Narrowband UVB is one of the safest and best-studied treatments for vitiligo, including in children. Doses start low and rise gradually, the eyes are shielded, and the surrounding skin is protected during targeted sessions.
Can diet or home remedies cure vitiligo?
No diet cures vitiligo, and home remedies, particularly those involving acids or strong sun, can scar or burn the patches. A balanced diet is sensible; treatment is medical.
