Vitiligo Treatment in Thalassery
The Thalassery founding clinic runs the network’s complete vitiligo programme under one roof: whole-body and hand-and-foot phototherapy, targeted phototherapy, prescription creams for active disease, and the surgical options, melanocyte-keratinocyte transfer and blister-roof grafting, for patches that have stopped responding. Patients come from across Malabar and are referred here from our other branches when surgery is the right step. Our vitiligo treatment options guide explains how each is chosen.

From Phototherapy to Grafting: The Full Programme
Most vitiligo responds to medical treatment: prescription creams that quiet the immune attack on pigment cells, and narrowband UVB phototherapy that both stabilises the disease and draws new pigment cells out of the hair follicles. The founding clinic adds hand-and-foot phototherapy units for the acral patches that whole-body cabins treat poorly, and targeted phototherapy for small patches on the face, neck and eyelids.
Every patient is staged first. Active disease, with new spots or hazy borders, is treated to halt spread, sometimes with a short supervised oral course; only then is repigmentation pursued. Dr. C.P. Thajudheen, who has treated vitiligo in Malabar for 28 years, reviews the staging, because the single most common mistake in vitiligo care is grafting or lasering a patch that is still spreading.
Surgery is for patches that have been stable for at least a year and have not repigmented with light. In melanocyte-keratinocyte transfer, a thin shave of normal skin is processed into a cell suspension and spread over the prepared patch; in blister-roof grafting, the roof of a suction blister raised on normal skin is laid onto the patch. Both are day procedures under local anaesthesia, and both are followed by phototherapy to spread the new pigment.
Results are judged in months. Faces and necks typically gain substantial repigmentation; grafted stable patches often fill well; lips, fingertips and bony points remain the hardest. Patients are told which category their patches fall into at the first consultation, and sun protection of the patches is part of the plan from day one.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions — Vitiligo Treatment in Thalassery
Who is a candidate for vitiligo grafting?
Someone whose patches have not changed in size or number for at least a year and have not repigmented with phototherapy and creams. Active disease is never grafted, because new patches would appear at the surgical site.
What happens during grafting surgery?
Under local anaesthesia, a thin layer of normal skin is taken from a hidden donor site and either processed into a pigment-cell suspension or used as a blister-roof graft, then placed on the prepared patch. It is a day procedure, followed by dressings for a week and phototherapy afterwards.
How much does vitiligo treatment cost in Thalassery?
Medical treatment and surgery are priced very differently, and the right option depends on your staging. The dermatologist sets out the plan and the cost at the consultation; nothing is booked without that conversation.
Do hands and feet respond?
They are the slowest sites, which is why the founding clinic has dedicated hand-and-foot phototherapy units. Expect partial improvement over a longer course, and grafting is an option for stable acral patches.
Can I be treated here if I was diagnosed in another city?
Yes. Patients from our Chennai, Coimbatore, Ooty and Pondicherry clinics are referred here for surgery with their records, and patients from elsewhere are welcome with whatever documentation they have.
