Vitiligo Treatment in Chennai
White patches that keep appearing need a plan, not another cream from the pharmacy counter. At Dr. Thaj Clinic in T. Nagar, vitiligo is confirmed by a dermatologist, staged as active or stable, and treated with narrowband UVB phototherapy, targeted phototherapy for small patches and prescription creams, with honest timelines from the first visit. How Vitiligo Is Treated at Our T. Nagar Clinic
Vitiligo is an autoimmune loss of the cells that make pigment, not an infection and not contagious. Chennai’s sun makes the contrast between patch and surrounding skin sharpest by March, which is when most patients first come in. The first job is to confirm the diagnosis under a Wood’s lamp, because tinea versicolor, post-inflammatory lightening and a few other conditions mimic it, and then to judge whether the disease is active: new patches, confetti-like spots and fuzzy borders mean it is still spreading.
Active vitiligo is treated to stop the spread first. Prescription creams that calm the immune attack are used on the patches, and for rapidly spreading disease the dermatologist may add a short, supervised oral course. Narrowband UVB phototherapy in the clinic, usually twice a week, both stabilises the disease and starts repigmentation; targeted phototherapy concentrates the light on small patches of the face and neck so the surrounding skin is not exposed.
Repigmentation is slow and comes in from the hair follicles, so the first sign is a freckling inside the patch. Face and neck respond first, often within eight to twelve weeks; the trunk is slower; fingertips, toes, lips and bony points are the most resistant. A course is typically twenty to thirty sessions, reviewed monthly, and the honest expectation is partial to good repigmentation on the face and slower gains elsewhere.
Patches that have been stable for a year or more and have stopped responding can be treated surgically with melanocyte-keratinocyte transfer or blister-roof grafting at our Thalassery and Kannur flagships; Chennai patients are referred with their plan and photographs in hand. Daily sunscreen on the patches, camouflage advice for events and plain answers about what vitiligo is and is not are part of every consultation.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions — Vitiligo Treatment in Chennai
Is vitiligo curable?
No treatment cures vitiligo, and any clinic claiming otherwise should be avoided. What treatment does is stop spread and bring pigment back into patches, often substantially on the face and neck. Many patients keep that result for years with maintenance.
How many phototherapy sessions will I need in Chennai?
Most courses run twenty to thirty sessions, two or three a week, with the first freckles of pigment appearing after about eight to twelve weeks on the face. Progress is photographed and reviewed monthly so you can see it.
What does vitiligo treatment cost?
It depends on how many patches there are, whether phototherapy or creams alone are used, and the number of sessions. The dermatologist explains the plan and the cost at the first consultation, before any treatment starts.
Is grafting available in Chennai?
Surgical grafting for stable patches is done at our Thalassery and Kannur flagship clinics. Chennai patients are assessed for stability here first, and referred with their treatment record when surgery is appropriate.
Can children with vitiligo be treated?
Yes. Children respond well to prescription creams and targeted phototherapy, with doses and exposure adjusted for age. Early treatment of active disease gives the best chance of limiting spread.
