The scalp is examined under magnification, and in children with patchy hair loss and scaling a fungal infection is looked for specifically: scalp ringworm needs a prescription course by mouth and checks of classmates and family, and no amount of oiling will clear it.
For adults the doctor reads the pattern. Diffuse shedding that began two or three months after a fever, surgery or delivery is usually temporary. Gradual thinning at the crown or parting is pattern hair loss and needs long-term care. Smooth round patches are alopecia areata. Blood tests for iron, thyroid, vitamin D and B12 are ordered when the history suggests a deficiency, which is common and easily corrected.
Treatment follows. Alopecia areata patches are injected with a small dose of steroid every four to six weeks. Pattern thinning is treated with a prescription plan and, where it adds benefit, PRP or GFC sessions from your own blood across four to six months, with laser comb sessions available as a supportive light therapy. For advanced baldness, transplant candidacy is assessed in Ooty and the graft surgery is scheduled at our Thalassery or Coimbatore surgical centres.
