Before anything is injected, the doctor examines it under magnification for the greasy scale of seborrhoeic dermatitis, the broken hairs and black dots of a fungal infection, and the redness of contact irritation from oils and dyes. An inflamed scalp sheds more, and clearing it with the right medicated routine often reduces hair fall on its own.
The hair is then assessed for its pattern. A pull test shows active shedding, miniaturised hairs reveal pattern thinning, and smooth round patches with short exclamation-mark hairs confirm alopecia areata. Blood tests for iron, thyroid, vitamin D and B12, with hormonal tests for women with irregular cycles, are ordered when the history points to them, and deficiencies are corrected before more expensive treatment is considered.
Treatment then follows the diagnosis. Alopecia areata patches are injected with a small dose of steroid every four to six weeks and usually regrow over a few months. Pattern thinning is treated with a prescription plan and, where it helps, a course of four to six monthly PRP or GFC sessions prepared from your own blood. For advanced, stable baldness, transplant candidacy is assessed here and the surgery is scheduled at our Thalassery or Coimbatore surgical centres, with follow-up back in Pondicherry.
