Keloid Treatment in Chennai

A pierced earlobe that grew a hard lump, an acne scar on the chest that kept thickening, a shaving cut on the jaw that became a raised itchy ridge: keloids are scars that do not know when to stop, and they are far more common on Indian skin. At Dr. Thaj Clinic in T. Nagar they are treated with a series of intralesional injections, silicone therapy and pressure, with honest talk about recurrence. Read why raised scars need a different approach first.

Flattening Keloids, and Keeping Them Flat

A keloid is scar tissue that grows beyond the original wound and keeps growing, driven by over-active collagen production that runs in families and is commonest on darker skin. In Chennai the usual sites are the earlobe after piercing, the chest and shoulders after acne, the jawline after shaving nicks, and surgical or vaccination scars. They itch, they are tender, and they do not go away on their own.

The main treatment is a course of intralesional injections: a small dose of anti-inflammatory medicine placed directly into the keloid with a fine needle, every three to four weeks, which softens and flattens it over three to six sessions. Numbing cream makes it tolerable. Dr. Shefana and the Chennai team combine the injections with silicone gel or sheets worn daily and, for earlobes, pressure earrings that stop the lump re-forming.

Keloids that are large, old or on the earlobe sometimes need the bulk removed first. Those cases are planned with the Thalassery and Kannur flagships, where surgical removal is followed immediately by injections to prevent regrowth; removing a keloid without that follow-up usually produces a bigger one, which is why the clinic never offers excision alone.

Honesty is part of the treatment. Keloids can return, and prevention after the course matters: no new piercings in keloid-prone ears, early treatment of acne to stop new chest scars, silicone on any fresh wound, and a word to the surgeon before any planned operation. Red, itchy and active keloids respond best; a hard, pale, old keloid takes longer.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Keloid Treatment in Chennai

Can a keloid be removed completely?

Keloids are flattened and softened rather than erased, and cutting them out without follow-up usually makes them grow back larger. A course of injections with silicone and pressure gives most patients a flat, pale, comfortable scar; surgery is reserved for bulky keloids and always paired with injections.

How many injections will I need?

Typically three to six sessions, three to four weeks apart. Red, itchy, active keloids respond fastest; old, hard ones take longer. The dermatologist reviews the response at each visit.

What does keloid treatment cost in Chennai?

It depends on the number and size of keloids and the number of sessions. The plan and cost are explained at the consultation after the keloids are examined.

Will the injections hurt?

There is a brief sting as the medicine goes into firm scar tissue; numbing cream applied beforehand keeps it tolerable, and sessions take only a few minutes.

Can I get my ears pierced again after treatment?

It is not advised in keloid-prone ears. If a piercing is essential, it should be discussed first, done with proper technique, and followed by silicone and pressure from day one.
