Keloid Treatment in Pondicherry

Keloids follow injury, and in Pondicherry the injuries are piercings, tattoos, chest acne and the occasional surgery. The result is a raised, shiny, itchy scar that grows past where the wound was and embarrasses people into long sleeves and high collars. At Dr. Thaj Clinic on Muthumariamman Kovil Street they are treated with injection courses, silicone and pressure, planned by a dermatologist. Start with why raised scars and keloids need a different approach.

Why Keloids Grow, and the Course That Flattens Them

Keloids are an over-reaction of the skin’s repair system: collagen keeps being laid down after the wound has closed, producing a firm, raised scar that extends beyond the injury and may itch, burn or feel tender. They are much more common in darker skin and in some families, and the earlobe, chest, shoulders, upper back and jaw are the usual sites. Nothing bought over the counter flattens them.

The Pondicherry clinic treats most keloids with intralesional injections: a small, measured dose of anti-inflammatory medicine placed into the scar with a fine needle after numbing cream, repeated every three to four weeks. Over three to six sessions the keloid softens, loses its redness and sinks towards the level of the surrounding skin. Dr. Nivedha R reviews the response each time and adjusts the dose and spacing.

Between sessions the work continues at home: silicone gel or sheets applied daily, pressure earrings for earlobe keloids, and protection from friction and sun. Keloids that are very large, long-standing or on the earlobe may need surgical debulking, which is arranged at the Thalassery or Kannur flagship with injections given immediately afterwards to stop regrowth.

Prevention is discussed at the first visit, because the next keloid is easier to stop than to treat: no further piercings or tattoos on keloid-prone skin, early treatment of acne to avoid chest scars, silicone on any new wound, and a warning to any surgeon before a planned operation. Recurrence is possible and is treated early if it begins.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Keloid Treatment in Pondicherry

Is a keloid dangerous?

No, it is not cancer and does not spread internally. It is scar tissue that overgrows. It is treated because it itches, hurts, restricts movement or affects appearance, and because active keloids keep growing if left.

How soon will I see a change?

Itching and redness usually ease after the first or second injection; flattening becomes visible over three to six sessions. Hard, old keloids respond more slowly than red, active ones.

What does keloid treatment cost in Pondicherry?

It depends on the number and size of keloids and the sessions needed. The dermatologist explains the plan and the cost at the consultation after examining them.

Can a keloid on a tattoo be treated?

Yes. The injections treat the scar tissue; the tattoo pigment is unaffected unless laser tattoo removal is also wanted, which is planned separately and cautiously in keloid-prone skin.

Will the keloid leave a mark after treatment?

A flat, slightly paler or darker patch of skin usually remains where the keloid was. Sun protection and time soften that; the lump, itch and tenderness are what treatment removes.
