Male Pattern Baldness Treatment: What Works at Each Stage

For most men, hair loss starts quietly: a hairline that creeps back at the temples, a crown that looks thinner in photos, more scalp showing under bathroom lights. This is male pattern baldness, and it is by far the most common cause of hair loss in men. It is also one of the most treatable, provided you match the treatment to the stage.

This guide explains what causes it, how doctors grade it, and what works at each stage. It is general education and does not replace an examination.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness

Doctors call it androgenetic alopecia. It runs in families and is driven by how hair follicles on the top of the scalp respond to male hormones. Over years, affected follicles shrink, producing finer, shorter hairs until some stop producing visible hair at all. The hair at the back and sides is usually resistant, which is why it survives and why it can be used for transplants. MedlinePlus has a clear summary of androgenetic alopecia.

Not all thinning is pattern loss. Shedding after a fever, crash diet or stress, low iron or thyroid problems can look similar, and patchy loss is a different condition again. Our guide to the real causes of hair loss covers the main ones, which is why diagnosis comes before treatment.

How Doctors Stage It

Dermatologists usually describe pattern loss using the Norwood scale, from stage 1 (no visible loss) to stage 7 (only a band of hair at the back and sides). In practice it helps to think in three groups:

  • Early: slight recession at the temples or a little crown thinning. Most hair is still there, just finer.
  • Moderate: a clear M-shaped hairline and a visible thin spot at the crown.
  • Advanced: the front and crown areas join, leaving smooth scalp across the top.

At the first visit, the doctor examines the scalp under magnification to see how many hairs are miniaturising. That tells you more than a mirror can.

Early Stage: Hold What You Have

This is the stage where treatment pays off most, because shrinking follicles can still be rescued. The core is a prescription medical plan: a scalp treatment applied daily and, for suitable men, a tablet. Your doctor explains which suits you, the possible side effects, and why it has to be continued to keep working. We do not name medicines here because the right choice depends on your examination.

Clinic treatments add to that foundation. PRP and GFC, made from your own blood and injected into thinning areas, usually run as four to six monthly sessions followed by maintenance. Mesotherapy and low-level light therapy are supporting options at some branches.

Moderate Stage: Combine and Measure

At this stage most men need a combination: the medical plan to stop further loss, PRP or GFC to thicken what remains, and regular photographs to measure progress. Expect shedding to slow within weeks and visible thickening from about three months. Our comparison of hair transplant versus PRP and GFC explains where each fits.

Advanced Stage: When a Transplant Makes Sense

Once areas are smooth and shiny, the follicles there are gone and no injection or tablet will bring them back. A hair transplant moves resistant follicles from the back of the scalp to the thinning areas. At Dr. Thaj we use FUE, which takes follicles one at a time and avoids a linear scar.

Timing matters. Transplanting too young, before the pattern has stabilised, can leave an island of hair as loss continues around it. Our guide to the right age for a hair transplant explains why doctors often ask young men to stabilise on medical treatment first. Even after a transplant, medical treatment protects the hair you were not given.

What Does Not Work

Hair oils, onion juice, shampoos promising regrowth and salon scalp treatments may condition the hair, but they do not change what is happening at the follicle. Our article on seeing a hair specialist doctor versus a salon covers the difference. Supplements help only if you are actually deficient, which a blood test shows.

Where to Get Treated

All six Dr. Thaj branches assess hair loss and offer PRP and GFC. FUE transplants are performed at our Thalassery, Coimbatore and Kannur clinics, with planning and aftercare available at every branch. Start with hair fall treatment in Chennai, Coimbatore or your nearest clinic.

Final Thoughts

Male pattern baldness is progressive, but it is slow, and the earlier you act the more hair you keep. Hold it with a medical plan, thicken it with clinic treatment, and save transplants for areas that are truly gone. The guidance here draws on the experience of Dr. Thaj Laser Skin & Hair Clinic, treating hair loss in South India since 1998.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age does male pattern baldness start?

It can begin in the late teens or twenties. The earlier it starts, the more important early treatment is, because rescued follicles keep producing hair.

Can male pattern baldness be reversed?

Thinning hair can often be thickened and further loss slowed with a medical plan and PRP or GFC. Areas that are completely smooth need a transplant, because the follicles there are gone.

Is PRP enough on its own?

Usually not. PRP and GFC work best alongside a prescription medical plan that tackles the cause. On their own, results tend to be smaller and shorter-lived.

Do I need to keep treatment going after a transplant?

Yes. Transplanted hair is resistant, but your existing hair is not. Medical treatment protects it so the result still looks natural years later.
